Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) was commissioned in a record time of 31 months and inaugurated on March 14, 2008, with an initial capacity of 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and 150,000 tons of cargo handling capacity per annum. The airport master plan has the flexibility to increase the ultimate capacity to over 100 MPPA in phases.
Currently Hyderabad Airport handles over 25 million passengers and around 159,000 tons of cargo annually and serves 18 International destinations through 20 International and 3 Indian passenger carriers and has 9 domestic carriers operating to around 65 domestic destinations. In addition to the above, 3 cargo airlines operate dedicated freighter services from Hyderabad Airport.
RGIA is located strategically at the geographical centre of India within two hours flying time to all major cities in India. It is also well positioned globally within a five hour radius from all major cities in the Middle East and South East Asia. Thus, RGIA has the potential to not only become one of the main air travel hubs in India, but also an important center for destination-cum-transit location for travel between the Eastern and the Western part of the world.
The cargo facility at RGIA is the gateway to the whole of South Central India’s supply chain. RGIA, Hyderabad boasts of the largest modular integrated cargo facility, which is spread over 14,330 sq.mts.
RGIA is all-weather, world-class Airport with Code-F (A380 compatible) runway and apron. It houses India’s first Pharma Zone that offers temperature-controlled Truck-Dock to airside environment. Lufthansa Cargo has certified the GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL), to be one of its key cargo hubs in South Asia for the transport of temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals. RGIA has India’s first and only airport based Free Trade Zone (FTZ) & Aerospace Park. With state-of-the-art facilities like Envirotainer base (temperature-controlled ULDs), AFS (Air Freight Station) and RFS (Road Feeder Service) network providing multi-modal transport connectivity, RGIA is well on its way to achieve its vision of becoming the Logistics Hub for India and South Asia Region.
